A devastating earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan late Sunday night, causing significant loss of life and injuries. According to Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Taliban government, over 800 people have been confirmed dead in Kunar province alone. Additionally, 12 fatalities have been reported in Nangarhar province.The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the earthquake at 11:47 PM local time on Sunday, with a shallow depth of only eight kilometers. Since the initial quake, at least three aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 4.5 to 5.2 have rattled the region.The earthquake’s impact extended beyond Kunar and Nangarhar, affecting other provinces such as Laghman and Nuristan. Reports indicate that approximately 2,500 people have been injured in Kunar, 58 in Laghman, and 4 in Nuristan.The Taliban authorities are currently assessing the full extent of the damage and mobilizing emergency response efforts to assist the affected population.
